15 Must Have Shots for Senior Sessions

Senior year is a once-in-a-lifetime season, and your portraits should feel like it.

A senior portrait experience should be designed with intention—from wardrobe guidance to posing to how your images will live in your home.

For seniors in Alpharetta, Johns Creek, and Cumming, the goal isn’t just “get some good pictures.”  It’s a collection of images that feel effortless, refined, and unmistakably you.

Here are 15 must have shots for senior sessions that every thoughtfully designed senior session should include.

Harvey Mackay

A great accomplishment shouldn’t be the end of the road,

just the starting point for the next leap forward.

1. The Natural Laugh

Not forced. Not posed. Just you, fully relaxed—and it shows.

2. The Stone Cold

Composed, calm, and self-possessed.  Who you are when no one is asking you to smile, and you can just be yourself with no demands.

3. The Editorial Look

A more refined, fashion-inspired moment. Subtle expression, strong presence, and quietly confident.

4. The Movement Shot

Walking, turning, or shifting naturally—because the most beautiful images often happen between poses.

Collage of two high school senior portraits, one boy walking with letterman jacket over his shoulder, one girl walking down the street in front of UGA's Sanford Stadium.

5. The Over-the-Shoulder Shot

A soft, effortless glance that feels both playful and spontaneous.

6. The Relaxed Sitting Pose

Casual, but intentional.  The relaxed, chill side of you.

7. The Close-Up Portrait

A tighter frame that captures expression, light, and personality—perfect for heirloom pieces and gifting.

8. The Full-Length Look

A complete, styled moment that showcases your wardrobe and presence from head to toe.

9. The Personal Passion Shot

Whether it’s a sport, an instrument, a pet, or something else meaningful to your story, this is where personality meets artistry.

10. The Candid Away Gaze

Not every image needs eye contact. These often become the most quietly powerful portraits.

11. The Companion Moment

A best friend, sibling, or even a beloved pet—tastefully included, this adds a personal layer to your session.

12. The Elevated Look

A more polished, styled outfit that brings a refined, elevated look to your gallery.

13. The Action Shot

Some of the most fun to create.  From dancing to cannonballs to catching balls, these are showstopping images in your gallery.

14. The One with the Parents

This one is not for you, it’s for them.  Reaching your senior year is a parenting milestone, too!

15. The Signature Portrait

This is the one. Clean, confident, and timeless—the one that if you got nothing else, this is the one you would have to have.  Not just a digital favorite—the image intentionally created to be printed large and displayed beautifully in your home.

Bonus Shot:  The Composite

This twist on two classics is a favorite of mine… an image that combines two different distinctly “you” looks into one image, in a subtly layered composite.

Two senior images, one of a boy track athlete, and the other of a girl lacrosse star. The images combine a photo of the athlete with a composited image of them layered on a wall surface behind them in the primary image.
