Senior Style Guide:

What to Wear for Your Senior Portraits

Senior portraits are all about celebrating you.  Your personality, your style, your hobbies & loves, and this pretty big moment in your life before you launch into a whole new thing.  But what you probably don’t want is to be stressing over what to wear for your senior pictures.

Good news, I’ve got your back!  Here’s a guide to help you choose what to wear for your senior portraits so you feel like your best self, and will make your senior session one for the ages.

1.  Choose at least three outfits

Now stay with me (talking to you “althetic-wear only” guys out there), because it’s not as hard as that might sound.  You’re going to need:

  • One dressy or polished look (think what you’d wear to a banquet, interview, or fancy dinner)
  • At least one casual look that feels relaxed, comfortable, and very you.
  • At least one outfit that leans into a hobby.  this could be a sports uniform, shirt of your fave school/team, dance gear, band outfit, letterman’s jacket, or anything connected to your hobbies, school spirit, a team you love, or other passions
  • Optional extras: additional casual or dressy outfits to give even more variety to your gallery (especially if you’re torn between styles!)

If it sounds overwhelming, don’t worry at all.  I’ll help you pick out your whole wardrobe so you know you have what you need, and it will all look great on camera.

2.  Solid colors or simple patterns keep the focus on you

Bright solids, soft neutrals, and earth tones tend to photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your face and expression. Unless they are picked to show something unique about you, loud patterns, logos, or trendy graphics can distract and might not age well over time. If you love patterns, choose one piece with a pattern, or pick texture-rich fabrics like lace, denim, or knits to add visual interest without overpowering you.

3.  Match your senior session wardrobe to our locations

If we’re shooting in a field of wildflowers, flowing dresses and soft tones will fit the mood.  For a more urban or downtown vibe, edgy denim, geometric patters, or bold colors will suit the scene. If we’re hitting the football stadium your jersey and a great pair of jeans is perfect.  And for a studio session, we’ll match the background to your outfit. The key is to have your outfit match the setting, not fight it or conflict.

4.  The magic of layers

Layers are your best friend during a session. They add variety and texture, and they’re easy to add or remove for different looks without a full outfit change. Think jackets, flannels, cardigans, or vests that you can mix in to change up your vibe.

And if you love accessories—bring them!
Simple jewelry, a stylish hat, sunglasses, or a scarf can totally change the feel of an outfit and make it more personal. Statement earrings or layered necklaces look especially great in close-up shots, while hats or bold shoes can give full-body photos extra flair. Bring a few options, and we can mix and match to see what works best on camera.

Just be sure your accessories don’t compete with your face—if in doubt, I’ll help you style it during your session.

5.  Pay attention to fit

Choose outfits that fit well and make you feel good! If something’s too tight, too loose, or constantly needs adjusting, it’ll show in your body language and facial expressions. Confidence is key—wear what helps you feel amazing in your own skin.

6.  And what’s on your feet

Yes, your feet will be in the photos! Choose shoes that complement your outfit and are clean and in good condition. If you’re wearing heels or shoes that aren’t easy to walk in, bring comfy backups for walking between locations.

7.  Showcase what makes you YOU

This is one of the most important parts of a truly personalized senior session: including items that reflect who you are right now. Think musical instruments, sports gear, pets, your car, books, art supplies, or even your favorite snack (yes, seriously).

When we plan your session, we’ll talk through what matters most to you—whether it’s your sport, your music, your hobbies, or your college dreams—and we’ll build those meaningful pieces into your portraits. That’s how we make your session feel custom, personal, and totally unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, your senior session should feel like you—comfortable, confident, and totally one-of-a-kind. The right outfits help tell your story, but the real magic comes from showing up as yourself. Not sure what works best? Don’t worry—I help guide every senior client through this entire planning process. We’ll make sure you’re not only dressed for success but ready to have fun while doing it.
